I finished this in about a day, I simply could not put it down. It definitely is not watered down to make it a little more politically correct. It is like you have a ring side seat to his real thoughts and actions, not the sanitized version. That's hard to put yourself out there like that when your thoughts and actions are that graphic. As a female, even though many times I was cringing and wondering if all males think this way, I did appreciate him being authentic. I have not been in combat like that, so how can I judge how someone copes. He appeared to be a man dedicated to his men with all his heart but not one to be able to stomach the sucking up to have propelled much further in rank. I have often wondered how men and women can turn a blind eye when they know a superior has made a phenomenally poor or dangerous decision. But they want to move up so they abide it and say nothing. It was refreshing to see someone that had just enough fight in him to know when to push a bit in the boundaries of orders from superiors when decisions could have endangered his men. That's who I would want leading me, if I were in that situation. You want someone who has the best interest of the little guys, not kissing up to top brass. I genuinely don't know how these men and women can transition back into normal society after what they've witnessed and had to do. They did their job, doing what the American government asked of them, now it is our job as citizens to support them in any means possible. Like I said, I have not been through the trauma of war with but I have been through trauma as a child and found yoga and meditation to be tremendously helpful in healing. I was looking for a way that I could help those with PTSD and now I teach yoga classes to our local army base at APG. It's my way of doing my part to supporting those who are suffering as a result of the horrors they were asked to endure. Reading the suicide statistics at the end of the book and the little personal acknowledgments of those who have succumbed to their suffering, reiterated how important it is to not forget about these men and women when they come home.
